Unholy Ghosts (Downside Ghosts, #1)

Unholy Ghosts - Stacia Kane This was so dark. Way darker than I expected and yet I really liked it. I was torn between wanting to smack Chess and beating the drug addiction out of her and wanting to just hug her. Right away we are introduced into the dark world of Chess and her complicated relationship with her drug dealer Bump and his right hand man Terrible. I really liked Terrible. I liked that he is honest about who he is and he accepts Chess and sees who she is, even when she clearly does not.
"He seemed totally asexual to her, like instead of fucking he preferred beating people up. A silly assumption. He was a man, after all. But then, she herself generally preferred drugs to fucking."

I was touched and saddened by Chess' observation of Terrible. Lex the rival drug lord was very intriguing and I'm sure that we'll get to know him deeper later.

Overall, I really liked how the story unfolded. A mixture of mystery and magic. It really did sadden me to see how little Chess thought of herself and I'm hoping that as the series progresses she's able to climb out of that dark hole.
